Credit Cards are such a convenient and safe way to make purchases today. Just about everyone accepts credit cards from gas stations to bars and restaurants. One of the first things to consider is how you will be using the credit card. If you plan on keeping a balance on your card (not pay it off entirely every month), then you should look for a credit card with a very low interest rate. This is also a very wise way for you to reduce your existing credit card payments in that many of these credit cards have 6- month introductory APR offers on balance transfers. That means you can move a balance from a higher interest card to the new card and basically not pay interest at all for months at a time.

If you always pay your credit card balances off entirely then you should look for the credit card that offers the best perks or bonuses. Some cards offer cash back (up to 5%) on your purchases. These cards usually do have an upper limit though on how much you can earn. Other cards offer points or airline miles that you can redeem for products, travel, girft certificates, and even cars.

Keep in mind that the four major card types are MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. Not all merchants will accept all those cards. My experience has been that most merchants will accept MasterCard and Visa. Costco, however, will only accept American Express. I love to try to use my Discover card, especially as gas stations, because they give such a large cash back rate. But there are some places that won't accept Discover.
